Renovation & Redevelopment
Every Aging Building Has Potential
Westwind preserves what makes a building worth saving, and rebuilds the rest around how you actually need to use the space.
Our Approach
We look at an aging building and see what it can still become, not just what needs to come out.
Westwind has extensive experience preserving vintage character while transforming a space around our clients’ needs — including the redevelopment of brownfield sites like our own headquarters in Grand Haven. We treat an older building as a head start, not a liability to design around.
Renovation carries its own kind of risk: hidden conditions, structural unknowns, and systems that were never designed for how the space will be used next. We evaluate those realities early, so you know what you’re taking on before construction starts, not after the walls come down.

Renovation & RedevelopmentGlasSource
At GlasSource, Westwind turned a cast-aside brownfield site into a beautiful, functional space for a glass manufacturer. The renovation preserved the building’s historic character — original hardwood floors, exposed wood beams, and a repurposed exterior metal door — while updating the industrial space to support the client’s manufacturing process.
Westwind Headquarters
Once an abandoned factory on a brownfield site, this 115-year-old structure is now home to Westwind’s own office, alongside Charter Spectrum and Transnation Title. We preserved the original wood beams, exposed brick, and a working freight elevator, then modernized the building with a rooftop solar array generating up to 30 kilowatts per hour — a project that now stands as a symbol of the rejuvenation of Grand Haven’s East End.
Our Philosophy
We feel the responsibility to preserve a century’s old craftsmanship while creating a dynamic, relevant environment, building momentum into the next century. The result reflects the pride, workmanship, and commitment of our trades, while respecting the work of a different era.

How We Work With You
Before you build, we help you think it through.
Renovation carries hidden variables that new construction doesn’t — structural surprises, code triggers, and systems you can’t fully see until the work begins. Westwind builds that uncertainty into the process from day one, so you have a clear plan and a realistic budget before demolition starts.
Understand Your Needs and the Building
We start by learning what you need from the space, and what the building’s history and condition can tell us about getting there.
Evaluate the Site, Scope, and Risk
Before you commit capital, we assess the practical realities — structural conditions, code requirements, hidden systems, and how phasing affects your ongoing operations.
Build a Clear Plan
With direction confirmed, we develop a buildable plan — coordinating scope, design, budget alignment, scheduling, and subcontractor planning before work begins.
Manage the Build and Stand Behind It
We manage the moving parts during construction, including whatever an older building reveals along the way, and stay accountable through closeout and beyond.
Start the Conversation
Have an aging building with more to give? Let’s talk before the risk gets expensive.
The earlier Westwind is involved, the more we can help you see what’s possible, avoid costly surprises, and turn an existing space into something built for what’s next.
